When it comes to college, there’s the stuff people tell you about- and then the stuff they don’t…The stuff they tell you about sounds something like this (flashback to that awkward meeting with your guidance counselor. She’s droning on about your future, meanwhile all you can think about is how someone should have burned that sweater she’s wearing back in the 1980’s.):
You’ll make more money if you go to college! You’ll be successful! You’ll learn new things! You’ll gain independence!
Yes, all of those things are true! Having a degree does make it easier to get a job. You will be able to impress all of your friends about how well you know random
factoids you learned in class, and you will gain independence… sometimes more than you wanted (There is no laundry fairy I am very sad to report…)
Then there’s the awesome stuff NOBODY mentions:
*EVERYONE fits in! It’s not that cliques don”t happen, but at most schools there’s about 1,000 clubs from sushi to salsa! You can try new things and look like a
fool with a bunch of other people! It’s a great place to meet new friends. Schools that have sororities have public events so you can check them out. Imagine having 150 really amazing friends to help you study, socialize, and be silly with!
*FREE STUFF: Dude. Everything is free. My freshman year of college my goal was to get 30 free shirts in one year. I actually did it! I also saw Dane cook (who was at the time a very relevant comic- I swear), got free food all the time, went to concerts…I even went to Disney World. FOR FREE! Its pretty awesome. Who doesn’t love S.W.A.G?
*There’s always stuff to do. College clubs will always have some kind of event going on, and you get to see a lot of really cool and different events just by being on campus!
*New Family: As much as we all love Uncle Frank, and Grandma Betty… the simple truth is that you can’t pick your family. BUT you can add to it! College is a great place to figure out who you really are, and then make friends who feel the same way about life as you! You create your own family away from home, this waywhen your car breaks down, or you run out of toilet paper, you have people who love you enough to help you out.
*People actually talk to you like you’re a grown up. I’ll admit that there are a lot of times when I definitely don’t feel like a grown up (bills? ewwww. Shopping spree instead? Yes please!) but, it’s pretty cool when people actually listen to what you have to say, and treat you like you know what you’re talking about.
*College is an awesome excuse to stay up until dawn watching bad movies, and sleep until 2pm because people will just sigh and say “Oh, you crazy college students!”
College is one of the best and craziest experiences you will ever have, so be safe, keep a good head on your shoulders, and have FUN!
